GUS Leagues Spring 2012 Spotts Park Coed Volleyball

It was another great evening of Sand Volleyball at the Grown Up Sports Leagues Coed Sand Volleyball League at Spotts Park near Downtown Houston. Let’s recap the evening’s action.

630PM: Ace-N-Ture v. Spikeaholics

The Purple Parrots being a collaborative and adaptable group added a new player to the fold, the benevolent Laurie, who is sure to be known as the team ringer from here on out. She served up aces for happy hour feeding the hungry all night. On the other end of the pit, the always loveable Blue Barracudas also added a ringer in Garrett who definitely fits the team moniker, Spikeaholics, drilling the point home with spikes and daggers. Although Ace would take home the decisive win, Spikeaholics would go to the bar as winners knowing that no one on the corner has swagger like them.

Ace-N-Ture wins, 2-0

630PM: Volleyballers v. Notorious D.I.G.

Volleyballers have long since made a name for themselves tackling all opponents while keeping the demeanor of a self contented obese male. Haters gonna hate. This was actually quite the competitive bout, with Volleyballers blonde bombshells making some major saving digs for dumps to Chuck and Rod. Although D.I.G. has been on the upswing lately, they may be becoming notorious for their spectacular wins AND inexplicable losses. We all know you’re nobody til somebody kills you.

Randazzlers v. Ace-N-Ture

The Pink Panthers sneak this one out against the rallying Ace-N-Ture Squad after offsetting opening sets. Asked how they squeaked out the victory, temporary co-captain, Ryan Lehman, gave me a partial snippet of his motivational speech to his team.

I said, “We will fight.” To which they responded, “No, we will run; and we will live.” I told them, “Shame on you. This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you’re going to let it be the worst. I guarantee a week won’t go by in your life you won’t regret walking out letting them get the best of you. Well I’m not going home. We’ve come too far and I’m gonna stay right here and fight for  this lost cause. The day might come when the courage of men fail, but it is not this day. The line must be drawn here. This far, no further. I’m not saying it’s gonna be easy. You’re going to work harder than you’ve ever worked before, but that’s fine we’ll just get tougher with it. A person grits his teeth and shows real determination. Failure is not an option. That’s how winning is done. Believe me when I say we can break this army here and win this one for the Gipper.”

Spikeaholics v. Spike My Balls

The Blue Barracudas have a tough time on this tough layout. The temple guards are screaming mad! (You’ll see what I mean).

Spike My Balls wins, 2-0

Spike My Balls v. Camp Gladiator (VB)

Camp Gladiator’s Juan Herrera shows up 6 hours before the game, stretches for 3 hours, practices for 2 hours, enjoys a light paleo meal and a cool down fat free yogurt parfait in anticipation for the game. Just kidding. We finally get some music going and Spike My Balls wins in straight sets while  enjoying the musical stylings of Carly Rae Jepsen. A good time is had by all and we go to the bar and do what we do best.

Spike My Balls wins, 2-0

(Ed Note: This week’s recap writer, Joe, came back from a weekend trip and really mailed it in. He’ll gladly eat crow when you see him tonight if you caught the earlier version of this game recap.)
