It was a beautiful afternoon at Lawrence Park in the Houston Heights for the Grown Up Sports Adult Coed Kickball League. Lets take a look at a recap of the evenings action!

Kickfooters United v. Foot Clan

The first match-up of the season saw the free agents of the Foot Clan face off against the International Squad of Kickfooters United. The Foot Clan looked to pick up where last season’s free agent team left off… beating opponents with superior kicking abilities. Meanwhile, team captain Veronica Garza assembled her crew of kickballers by scouring the globe, observing local kickball matches and hand selecting the finest performers. Both teams took a while to find their sea legs, as the game of kickball is no simple playground game. The Kickfooters looked primed to run away with this one, recording the first ever GUS Leagues triple play in the second inning. However, the Foot Clan’s Javodrick “Rock Steady” Warfield displayed his superior kicking ability, clearing the Kickfooter last line of defense for a huge home run that blew the game open (and in the process showing off his best Happy Gilmore riding the bull impersonation).

GUS Leagues Spring 2012 Kickball

Kickfooters looked to bounce back, behind the big leg of Big Ben, who knocked out a home run of his own. Unfortunately, not all stories can have a fairy tale ending, as this time the Foot Clan came out on top.

Foot Clan wins 5-2

Balls N’ Dolls v. CG… Wut-Wut

Camp Gladiator was back for their second rodeo with the GUS Leagues kickball league, while Balls N’ Dolls have some crossover participants from our basketball league. But would the stingy defense of New Creation translate over to the kickball arena? In a word… yes. If there was one word to sum up this game it was defense. With both teams playing disciplined games, taking the easy out and making the smart plays, this game demonstrated that kickball is as much a mental as a physical exercise. One item to keep a look out for was the Balls N’ Dolls pitcher, Mario Salinas, known to his flock of adoring female fans as El Guapo, whose viscous curve ball left the Gladiators mystified all afternoon. Not to be outdone, the Gladiators made terrific catches in the field, showing why they are a force to be reckoned with, even though many were still reeling from the workout of the CG Games earlier that weekend (looking at you Roz!). In the end, it was a game marked by a lack of scoring, as the two tied at one in what looks to be a fledgling rivalry.

Tie 1-1

Go Kick Yourself! v. CG…Wut-Wut

Fresh off the tie, the Gladiators looked to rebound against the pink warriors of Go Kick Yourself! After getting up 2-0 in the first ining, the Gladiators believed they were ready to dominate the game. What they couldn’t have prepared for was the old school play ground spanking (not sure what an old school play ground spanking is) Kick Yourself was about to give to them. Kick Yourself really showed out, nailing balls down the line, running the bases with precision and scoring runs in droves. To complement their offense, the team gave some of the most heroic performances on defense in recorded history with the notable exception of a dropped fly ball in the 5th. “Did you get a picture of that? His name is Ronnie Strange!”

GUS Leagues Spring 2012 KickballWhy yes, Kristen, we did a get a picture of that. Here’s your moment, Ronnie!

In particular there was a sequence late in the game where the ace pitcher nailed two consecutive batters in a row right at first base from what seemed to be miles away. Not to mention the spectacular fielding of Go Kick Yourself! stud third baseman, Tony. The Gladiators weren’t done, as they loaded the bases in the final inning. Unfortunately, it was a bitter end to a long weekend for the CG crew. If this game showed anything though, it is that the Kick Yourself crew means business!

Go Kick Yourself! wins 8-3
