Another regular season in the books brought us to the semi-finals and championships of the Grown Up Sports Saturday Adult Men’s Basketball League in the Houston Heights. Let’s see how the west was won.
2PM: Goalbreakers v. LetsGetit Again
Goalbreakers showed up in rare form; shorthanded. After a slew of 10 day contracts, the dastardly nemesis of all of our teams, prior commitments, struck again. Without c-c-c-combobreakers, Jeremy Dean and Brian Walker, the Goalbreakers were facing an uphill battle. Luckily, Sisyphus manifested himself in Raymond Elliot, who turned up despite his quiet nature. Raymond’s first half 17 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals would be the lifeblood of the Goalbreakers, making up for the rest of the team’s offensive woes. Reginald also belatedly picked up the pace, energized by a tower heist worthy steal into an and 1.
On the other end of the court, LetsGetIt Again’s Kunal Patel sawed off any momentum the GB’s had going, bringing The Carpenters “Rainy Days and Saturdays” to the Goalbreakers in the form of wet threes raining from the heavens. Four first half three’s would take us into the half with LetsGetIt Again up 38-35.
In the second half, GB’s Reginald would put up a good fight but not enough to stop the LetsGetIt Again onslaught. Claude, Tony, Tootie and Kunal all began bombing from everywhere, led by Tony’s 18 second half points, effectively ending the Goalbreaker’s season.
LetsGetIt Again wins, 78-59 (See Box Score)
GUS Player of the Game: Tony Jones (LetsGetIt Again): 25 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals, 1 block
3PM: Los Blancos Guapos v. New Creation
The heretofore unbeaten and unscathed New Creation team had been looking forward to this game all season. Both teams are familiar with each other, having competed in tournaments over the years. Despite their lackluster finish of the regular season, Guapos are a powerhouse team, coming into the season as a pre-season championship favorite. Guapos came out firing on all cylinders, busting pistons like a 2007 Lebron James (spoiler alert: they finished like a 2012 Lebron). All the Guapos played stellar, with Ryan and Hendrick winning efficiency awards on the day. The gamut of the offensive load was carried by Chris M, scoring 20 first half points on 10 shots. New Creation wouldn’t go down without a fight. Early foul trouble kept them from banging with the size of the Guapos, but Elmer “DJ Loon” Jimenez’s 6 first half three’s would keep New Creation within arm’s reach.
After the midway point (40-37 Guapos), New Creation was unable to mimic the frenetic pace of the first half, with Elmer going quiet. The return of Bobby and Marquise (early foul trouble) would help in addition to Jacob driving the offensive and defensive point home. Unfortunately, with no answers for the Andrew and Chris Problem, New Creation would find its first loss off the season in the semifinals.
Guapos win, 77-69 (See Box Score)
GUS Player of the Game: Chris M (Guapos): 32 points, 4 rebounds
4PM: LetsGetIt Again v. Los Blancos Guapos
The Guapos decided after about 15 minutes of rest, that it was time to serve this pre-heated dinner. After watching Guapos cook for 40 minutes, LetsGetIt Again couldn’t help but look like chicken dinner to a chicken hawk. (That’s a joke, son. I keep pitching em and you keep missing em.) As evenly matched a game as one could expect, and with some stellar match ups to boot, with Tony Jones on Andrew, Claude on Chris M and Simmie on Andrew, LetsGetIt Again still couldn’t slow the pace of the Blancos. Ryan Brandon rose to the occasion playing an almost flawless game of basketball, freeing up space for Guapos’ other shooters and forcing LetsGetIt Again to play honest defense. Guapos would shoot almost 60% from the field, with solid contributions from their entire lineup and David Bryce taking home GM of the Year awards for engineering a farming system unrivaled in rec league basketball.
Guapos win, 75-60 (See Box Score)
GUS Player of the Game: Los Blancos Guapos, Los Mundos Championes Del Mundo!
