It was a wet and wild evening at the Grown Up Sports Leagues’ Monday Coed Volleyball league at Spotts Park just west of downtown Houston. Lets take a few minutes and recap the evening’s activity.

6:30 PM: Spikeaholics v Volleyballers

Like the true players they are both the Spikeaholics and Volleyballers looked at the clouds, looked at the pit, looked at each other, looked at the pit, then looked back at each other. Sadly this was not the game they wanted to play. But, they decided to stop using lady scented body wash and unanimously agreed with the famous words of Guido D’Elia, “If it rains, we’ll get wet with a smile on our face” playing the first ever GUS Leagues Mud Volleyball game. What the Spikeaholics couldn’t account for, however, was the ineptitude of their stand in 6th man. Yikes. The Volleyballers were able to take advantage of the weak spot, winning in straight sets.

6:15 PM: Notorious D.I.G. v Spike My Balls

Meanwhile, in the significantly dryer pit #2, the D.I.G. crew took on Spike My Balls in a battle of resistance. Who could withstand the elements longer? As the drizzle began to…drizzle… D.I.G. dug up the victory like they were Pookas or Fygars.

7:00 PM: Spike My Balls v Volleyballers

At this point in the evening, that drizzle we spoke of became a full on downpour. But again, “if it rains we get wet” was the motto of the evening. Given an option to rain delay/postpone the game or play for keeps, both teams huddled into cohorts and came out with the same result: play for keeps. The rain acted as the 7th man for the Volleyballers who played as if they’d done this before. A few stand out spikes from Rod “The Bod” and this one was a wrap.

Volleyballers play even better when wet, 2-1

Ace-N-Ture having the most fun of the day

7:15 PM: Randazzlers v. Ace-N-Ture

Again, at this point the heavens were descending upon the Monday night sand volleyball league at Spotts Park and Pit #1 was looking like a kiddie pool. Faced with the option to play swamp volleyball or postpone, these two teams wisely chose to postpone. However, they did not choose to stop the fun. GUS games are the best because of the people involved. Though there were no scores recorded there was a party in the pit for the next 2 hours leaving no article of clothing dry or clean. You’ve got to love that.

Game rescheduled for the last week of the regular season.

7:45PM Randazzlers v Camp Gladiator (VB)

Finally, the downpour subsided and, left to their own devices, both teams chose to play a game of clay volleyball. Camp Gladiator, fresh off a serious training session in the midst of the rain, was probably a little drained. But no less they fought valiantly, courageously, magnificently, but not victoriously. The Randazzlers used all their preparation in the water holes against Ace-N-Ture as an appropriate warm-up and floated to victory against CG.

In all serious, thank you all for coming out and having a grand ole time. Although we can’t control the weather we will make sure to appeal to a higher power and see if we can keep the rest of the season going without rain outs. I’m not sure if it works like that, though. Thanks for coming out and weathering the storm. As you can see, the day ended up being beautiful. There were even rumors of a full on double rainbow all the way across the sky.

On a serious note, if there is ever lightning we will call the games and if it is raining in advance we may call the games by posting on the home page and on the GUS Leagues Facebook. Like us because you like us. Be sure to monitor those on game day to make sure in advance.

Special shout out to Debbie from Ace-N-Ture for providing us with another bout in the mud in the parking lot at the top of the hill. I think it was a good prep for CG Games we had on Saturday so Shamus, Favor and I appreciate the additional workout. The pleasure was all ours.

That’s all he wrote.
