The sun shone through the clouds this past Sunday for the Grown Up Sports Coed Kickball League to take place. This week we were at the Woodland Community Center in the Houston Heights. With the foliage unbearable high, lets take a look at how the games went down.

CG…Wut…Wut… v. Balls ‘N Dolls

This was a battle for playoff positioning, with both teams sporting 3 victories. The game got off to a quick start for the Gladiator crew, and they never looked back. Being veterans of Woodland Park, the Gladiators really took advantage of knowing the park’s nuances, utilizing their signature brand of small ball to get players on base. One Gladiator who has never been a fan of small ball is Shamus, who takes his kicks as seriously as his opponents should take his leg, which is possibly the strongest in the league. With two shots to the left field, Shamus catapulted himself into the talks of GUS RBI champion. Of course, the highlight of the game came when Balls N Dolls kicked the ball deep into the outfield. In an effort to make a play, Eric trucked his teammate and then crashed through the water to make the play in the outfield. Of course he may not have been successful on this go round, but the CG defense did just enough to keep the game out of reach.

CG wins 10-3

Balls ‘N Dolls v. Go Kick Yourself

Coming off the loss, Balls ‘N Dolls knew they would have to do something to right the ship. Of course, going up against the undefeated Go Kick Yourself crew was a tall task. That’s when the call was put in to bring in start pitcher Mario, who had spent the last several weeks since his last appearance mastering the art of the spinning pitch (as shown above). Behind their great defense and multiple plays at the plate, the Balls ‘N Dolls crew held GKY to limited offense, and after some nifty kicking by their Murderer’s Row, did something no team had been able to against the Pink Warriors thus far this season… take a lead. With the time running out, and innumerable questionable calls made along with way (“Favortism strikes again”), GKY found a way to tie the game up heading into the bottom of the seventh. After Kristen “the Jet”  bunted to advance a runner all the way to third with no outs, the game looked to be in hand. But the rocky field prevented Tony aka “GUS Nostradamus” from fulfilling his prophecy of winning the game with his patented sacrifice fly. That is when Ronnie Strange stepped to the plate, cool as a cucumber, ready to deliver. His sac fly to the outfield was perfect, as “Replacement Player #1” strolled home. But then, inexplicably, Kristen jetted down the second base line to steal a base, and right after Replacement Player #1 touched home, Kristen was tagged for the third out. Unfortunately for Balls ‘N Dolls, when a play is not a force, the run counts, and GKY snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Go Kick Yourself wins 6-5

Kickfooters United v. Foot Clan

The Kickfooters were searching for their first victory of the season. The Foot Clan, saw this as their opportunity to make a move in the playoff race. Things were looking up for the Kickfooters after they took the early 1-0 lead following some stellar base running of David, known to his fans as the “Human Torch” by the way he blazes through the bases. Of course, Jay, the loud mouth of the South, had something to say about that, and kicked a thundering shot straight into the trees utilizing his leaping spin kick as shown above. Taking the lead, the Foot Clan looked to its defense to hold on for the W, relying on new addition Max to roam the outfield, as he reeled in catches from all over in an unparalleled display of defense. But the Kickfooters were not done. Slow and steady wins the race, and coming into the seventh, they were down, but not out. After getting runners on base, Whitney shot the ball to the outfield scored the tying run. The team could feel victory in the air. That’s when the Saolo stepped to the plate and took what was rightfully his, nailing a shot down the gut of the defense, right through the Foot Clan’s hands scoring the final run. Victory for the Kickfooters.

Kickfooters win 6-5
